Home to Robert Burns, Dumfries is an ancient town full of history and has been regularly voted the best place to live in the UK due to a number of factors, including a temperate climate and picturesque surroundings. Visit the Robert Burns Centre or take a wee dram at his favourite pub, the Globe Inn – or explore some of the town’s rich cultural heritage. Dumfries is often referred to as ‘queen of the south’.

Gretna Green – famous for the marriages conducted there involving young couples who had eloped together to get married – often as Scottish law permitted marriage at a younger age. Gretna was the first town across the border and so became a hotspot for such ceremonies. Many of the wedding ceremonies took place in strange places such as the local blacksmith and these blacksmiths became known as ‘anvil priests’! To this day Gretna Green remains a popular location for weddings.

New Abbey is a little village full of charm and character a mere 5 miles south of Dumfries and set amongst rolling green hills. The village is most famous for the ruins of Sweatheart Abbey and also has a few pubs and arts and craft shops.
